MLB Betting Strategy

There are a few basics MLB betting strategies that you can implement to help you win more money betting on MLB baseball. I don’t have any real huge secrets to share with you, but by following basic MLB betting strategy you will highly increase your chances on winning.

You can take these betting strategies and apply them to any sport you bet on to increase profits.

#1 – Stick To Straight Bets (Not Parlays)

Casual or beginner bettors will often always go for the parlay or combined bets. I mean how could you not with those high payouts, right?

For those who don’t know, parlay bets are when you combine multiple wagers to multiply the odds. All bets must win in order for you to win your parlay bet. The bigger odds can give big payouts on small wagers, making it very hard to resist for most casual MLB bettors.

If you are serious about winning money this MLB season you need to stop making parlay wagers, and stick 100% to straight bets.

MLB betting is tough enough, and when you start to combine your wagers together you will see yourself losing A LOT more often than winning. You will find yourself with a drained bankroll before you know it.

If I’m going to have a few beers with some buddies I might lay down a parlay bet for a big score just for fun, but 99.9% of the time I stick with what makes the money – straight bets.

If you’ve been a parlay bettor previous to reading this MLB betting strategy article you might be addicted to the highs of cashing a parlay ticket, but just ask yourself if you’re in it to make money overall.

#2 – Manage Your Bankroll

Another basic sports betting strategy that needs to be applied to your MLB betting is managing your bankroll.

At the start of the MLB season you should set aside a set amount of money that you can afford to gamble with – this will be called your bankroll.

If you are one of the bettors who make deposits to betting sites on the regular because of depleted account balances you need to put this into action.

Once you have your MLB betting bankroll number set you will want to write it down (I suggest keeping your bankroll and all MLB picks in a spreadsheet).

When making your MLB bets you want to be betting 1-5% of your bankroll on each selection. If you have a $1,000 bankroll for the MLB this would mean bets of $10-$50 on each selection.

This may not sound like a lot of money, and you might think you can make a lot more money betting 25-30% (or whatever amount of your bankroll) on each game, but you need to take into consideration that ALL MLB bettors will go through cold streaks. No matter what, if you are making a high number of bets over the course of the MLB season you will go through cold spells, where you miss 4, 5, 6 or more picks in a row.

If you stick to the 1-5% of your bankroll per each MLB bet you will have a very tough time losing your money.

This is one of the toughest MLB strategies for most casual bettors to understand. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen someone have a “sure bet” risking most or all of their bankroll on it… only to see it lose (and them sitting without any money).

Set your bankroll, adjust your bets accordingly, and watch your betting balance/bankroll grow.

#3 – Shop For The Best Odds

In case you weren’t aware, all sportsbooks have their own odds.

5Dimes might have the Yankees listed at -180, while Bovada might have the Yankees listed at -200 for the same game.

If you were going to bet on the Yankees which odds would you rather take? Of course you would go with the -180 odds at 5dimes!

This may not seem like a big difference in odds, but it will add up immensely over time (especially when betting MLB where you will often be making a higher number of bets per season compared to other sports).

Those 20 cents per dollar of bets won or loss will add up – and can make the difference between profiting and losing.

One of my biggest MLB betting tips is to shop around for the best odds (referred to as line shopping) on whatever wager you are looking to make. Distribute your bankroll between at least 3 different betting sites, and place your bets on the site that has the best odds for your pick.

The extra two minutes it may take you to line shop is worth it. In all honesty if you are trying to make money betting on MLB and you don’t shop for the best odds you would be a fool. It is the easiest MLB betting strategy to implement and it makes a difference – just do it!
