A rainy day in St Louis yesterday postponed Game 6 and we are now ready for what could be the last game of the 2011 MLB season. The Rangers lead 3-2 and look to close things out in Game 7 so they don’t have to face a winner takes on Game 7 in St Louis Friday night.

I think the Cardinals should be able to force a deciding Game 7 tomorrow night with Garcia on the mound tonight, and I like the line enough to make it a 2 unit play….

With the number of times I’ve been backing the Cardinals lately it looks like I am a St Louis fan haha, but that definitely isn’t the case – I’ve just found value taking them here as they don’t seem to be getting enough credit.

Texas Rangers @ St Louis Cardinals – CARDINALS TO WIN (-115)

(Note: I’m risking 2.30 units to win 2 units)

The Texas Rangers send Colby Lewis to the mound tonight for Game 6. Lewis has always seemed to pitched pretty well in the postseason, even though he is an average starting pitcher during the regular season (4.40 ERA this season). In these playoffs Lewis is 1-1 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and .191 opponents batting average. In his start in Game 2 he lasted 6.2 innings giving up just 1 run on 4 hits. On the mound for the Cardinals is Jaime Garcia, who the Cardinals had set up to pitch twice at home (and for good reasons). During the regular season Garcia went 9-4 with a 2.55 ERA at home (compared to 4.61 road ERA) with a 1.11 WHIP, and .230 opponents batting average. Garcia’s home ERA in these playoffs is under 2.00, and he pitched 7 shutout innings against the Rangers in Game 2 where he struck out 7 while walking just 1 batter. Take note that the Cardinals are 4-1 in their last 5 World Series home games, and 13-5 in their last 18 home games overall. The Cardinals are 11-2 in Garcia’s last 13 home starts vs a team with a winning record, 4-0 in his last 4 starts as a home favorite, and 9-2 in his last 11 starts as a home favorite of -110 to -150. The Cardinals have played well in this World Series but a few mistakes have cost them (both by the players and the coaches). Also note that the Cards left 12 runners on base in Game 5 – a game I thought they should have won. Tonight’s play comes down to pitching and home field advantage. The Cardinals face elimination and Tony La Russa will do everything he can to force a Game 7 tomorrow night. Jaime Garcia has been lights out at home and I expect nothing less tonight with the Cardinals down 3-2. Take St Louis to win tonight.

I’m coming right back with the Cardinals as underdogs tonight in Game 5. This time they have their ace on the mound.

2 unit play tonight…

St Louis Cardinals @ Texas Rangers – CARDINALS TO WIN (+115)

(Note: I’m risking 2 units to win 2.30 units)

Tonight we see the same pitching match up as we did in a St Louis Game 1 victory. Chris Carpenter is 3-0 this season over 4 starts, and the Cardinals have won all 4 times he’s been on the mound. He has a 3.52 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and .235 opponents batting average. In Game 1 Carpenter went 6 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 runs, which came from a 2 run Napoli homer. C.J. Wilson is winless over his 4 starts this postseason with a 0-3 record, 7.17 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and .298 opponents batting average. In Game 1 Wilson allowed 4 hits and 3 runs in 5.2 innings of work, where he also walked 6 batters. He has walked 14 batters in just 21.1 innings of work this postseason. The Cardinals have shown that they don’t mind playing on the road, taking one game in Texas already and winning 16 of their last 22 road games. The Cardinals are 13-4 in their last 17 games as an underdog, and 19-7 in their last 26 games following a loss. St Louis is 5-0 in Carpenter’s last 5 starts and 5-0 in his last 5 road starts. Note that the Rangers have gone 0-4 in their last 4 games following a win. Chris Carpenter has been the better pitcher in this post-season by far, and I have him continuing his success tonight. We have value on the road team with the pitcher who has been better over the past month. Take the Cardinals at +115.

A 2 UNIT Winner last night with Cardinals coming through with a 3-2 victory at home.

I’m coming right back on the Cards tonight, but this time for just 1 unit.

Texas Rangers @ St Louis Cardinals – CARDINALS TO WIN (+110)

(Note: I’m risking 1 unit to win 1.10 units)

Last night Carpenter went 6 innings allowing 2 runs, and the bullpen came in and got 3 shutout innings for the win. I really like how the Cardinals played last night, and I like them again as underdogs tonight. On the mound we will see Colby Lewis for the Rangers and Jaime Garcia for the Cardinals. Colby Lewis has had two starts this postseason, with a 3.86 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, and .262 opponents batting average. In his ALCS start against the Tigers he went just 5.2 innings giving up 8 hits and 4 earned runs (including two homeruns). He does have good numbers in his career postseason starts, including a win in last years World Series, but will face a very tough Cardinals lineup. Jaime Garcia is 0-2 over three starts this postseason, with a 5.74 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, and .297 opponents batting average. He had a quality start against the Phillies, but struggled in the NLCS. He was great at home this season, going 9-4 with a 2.55 ERA at Busch Stadium. Take note that the Rangers are just 7-17 in Lewis’ last 24 road starts vs a team with a winning record, and 4-9 in his last 13 starts when he is a small favorite of -110 to -150. The Cardinals are 11-1 in Garcia’s last 12 home starts vs a team with a winning record, and 17-4 in his last 21 starts vs a team with a winning record overall. The Cardinals are also 4-1 in Garcia’s last 5 home starts. I think we have a slight pitching edge to the Cardinals because this game is being played in St Louis. Cardinals play tough at home, and I like them in this spot as an underdog. Take the Cards at +110 for 1 unit.

Alright, so here we are – the 2011 World Series with the Texas Rangers and St Louis Cardinals. I am excited to watch some great baseball, and also excited to make some more money before we wrap up the 2011 MLB season.

Coming into the World Series we are up 48.52 units on the season… which includes being 22-5 with our “5 Star” picks.

I don’t have a series play, but will have plays within the games… first one coming tonight on the home team (2 unit play)…

Texas Ranges @ St Louis Cardinals – CARDINALS TO WIN (-118)

(Note: I’m risking 2.38 units to win 2 units)

Tonight we will see the ace of each club with Chris Carpenter going for St Louis and lefty CJ Wilson on the mound for Texas. Chris Carpenter is 7-2 in career postseason starts, with a 3.11 ERA. In his only other World Series start Carpenter pitched 8 shutout innings. This postseason Carpenter has started three games, going 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA, 1.18 ERA and .230 opponents batting average. CJ Wilson is 1-4 in his career postseason starts with a high 5.40 ERA. Wilson has yet to win in three starts this postseason, going 0-2 with an 8.04 ERA, 1.85 WHIP, and .318 opponents batting average. Note that the Rangers are just 2-9 in their last 11 games as an underdog of +110 to +150. The Rangers are also just 6-14 in Wilson’s last 20 road starts vs a team with a winning record, and 2-6 in his last 8 starts as a road underdog. On the other hand the Cardinals are 4-1 in their last 5 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150 and 12-4 in their last 16 home games. St Louis is also 11-1 in Carpenters last 12 starts as a home favorite of -110 to -150 and 58-24 in his last 82 home starts. Both teams have big bats in their lineup, but the right-handed hitters in the Cardinals line up should be able to get to southpaw CJ Wilson. Carpenter has been the far better pitcher in the postseason, and the Cardinals get a boost playing at home. We don’t have to lay much to get the Cardinals at home behind Capenter. Take St Louis for 2 units.

A winner yesterday with the Tigers getting things done with a 7-5 win, giving us a nice 2 unit pick up!

The playoffs have been great to us, and we are no up (I think a season high) 47.52 units… $100 bettors up $4,752!

Lets keep it rolling with a play in tonight’s NLCS Game 5…

Milwaukee Brewers @ St Louis Cardinals – CARDINALS TO WIN (-123)

(Note: I’m risking 1.23 units to win 1 unit)

Things are tied up at 2 after a Brewers win last night, but I have the Cardinals going up 3-2 heading back to Milwaukee where things will no doubt get interesting. The Brewers have Zack Grienke on the mound tonight, while the Cardinals counter with Jaime Garcia. Grienke is 1-0 in 2 starts this postseason but has allowed 10 earned runs on 16 hits in his 11 innings of work. Garcia is 0-2 allowing 9 earned runs on 12 hits in 11 innings of work. Take note that the Brewers are 1-5 in their last 6 playoff road games, and just 1-4 in Grienke’s last 5 starts as an underdog. The Cardinals are 11-4 in their last 15 home games, 5-0 in their last 5 following a loss, and 20-6 in their last 26 vs a right-handed starter. The Cardinals are 11-5 in Garcia’s last 16 home starts, 18-5 in his last 23 starts vs a team with a winning record, and 10-1 in his last 11 home starts vs a team with a winning record. St Louis has had the Brewers number as of late despite the 2-2 start to the NLCS, winning 8 of their last 11 meetings overall. Both pitchers have had their struggles in the postseason, but I see Garcia settling down here at home in a non-elimination game. The Cardinals bounce back well from a loss, and I can’t see them dropping a second straight home game to the Brewers. A little bit of value on St Louis tonight, and we will make it a 1 unit pick.

We had two picks last night and ended up down 1 unit.

Our underdog pick on the TIGERS (+116) wasn’t a bad one, as they took the Rangers into extra innings, but in the end Texas scored a few runs in the 11th for the win. Our under 7 pick for the Brewers/Cardinals pushed with a 4-3 final score. Both teams got early runs and their aces didn’t have their best stuff – we will take the push in that situation.

Bouncing back with a 2 unit WINNER Thursday afternoon…

Texas Rangers @ Detroit Tigers – TIGERS TO WIN (-159)

(Note: I’m risking 3.18 units to win 2 units)

The Rangers took Game 4 going up 3-1, but the Tigers are hoping to head back to Texas, and have their ace on the mound in Game 5. Justin Verlander is back on the mound after 4 days rest and looks to give his team a chance at forcing a 6th game. Of course Verlander always gives the Tigers a chance at winning, as they are 50-23 in his last 73 starts, 40-14 in his last 54 starts as a favorite, and 39-12 in his last 51 home starts. Like mentioned in my 5 Star write up, the Tigers do a good job bouncing back from losses as they are 35-16 in their last 51 games following a loss. Note that the Tigers are also 45-12 in their last 57 games as a favorite of -151 to -200. There isn’t much negative to say about CJ Wilson, who will be on the mound for the Rangers, but he is just 6-13 in his last 19 road starts vs a team with a winning record, and 2-5 in his last 7 starts as a road underdog. The Rangers are 5-17 in their last 22 meetings with Detroit at Comerica Park. Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland seemed to have a positive attitude in post game and I expect him to bring that into the locker room to keep the spirits up. Detroit knows that they send their ace to the mound in front of their home crowd, where he is lights out, and if they can force another game anything can happen. I don’t see the Tigers going down easily especially with Verlander on the mound. I’m laying some chalk here on the home team, but I like the price we are getting – I’m making this a 2 unit play.

We were on the TIGERS at -130 and they took Game 3 by a score of 5-2.

That makes us 22-5 on the season with those Big Plays for over 80 units of profit!!! ($100 bettors up $8,000)

I am coming right back with two 1 unit plays today…

Texas Rangers @ Detroit Tigers – TIGERS TO WIN (+116) *EARLY START*

(Note: I’m risking 1 unit to win 1.16 units)

The Rangers go with Matt Harrison on the mound who was 14-9 on the year with a 3.39 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and .261 opponents batting average. He didn’t make the playoff rotation for the Rangers last season, but he did get a win in his lone start this year pitching 5.2 innings against Tampa allowing 6 hits and 3 earned runs. He went 0-2 against the Tigers this season with a high 6.30 ERA, and is 1-4 with a 6.89 ERA against them lifetime. On the mound for the Tigers is Rick Porcello who was also 14-9 on the season with a 4.75 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and .292 opponents batting average. Porcello started against the Yankees and got the loss giving up 5 hits and 4 earned runs over 6 innings, but he did strikeout 5 and walked just 1. He also pitched two perfect innings of relief in Game 1 vs the Rangers allowing no hits, no walks, with one strikeout. He beat the Rangers back in June when he went 6 innings allowing just 1 run. Note that the Tigers are 11-3 in their last 14 after allowing 2 runs or less in the previous game, and 21-6 in their last 27 games after scoring 5 runs or more in their previous game. Detroit is also 7-2 in their last 9 playoff home games, and 22-8 in their last 30 home games overall. Detroit is 51-24 in their last 75 home games vs a left handed starter, and 38-18 in their last 56 home games vs a team with a winning record. The Tigers are 4-1 in Porcello’s last 5 home starts, and 5-2 in his last 7 starts vs a team with a winning record. The Rangers are 0-5 in Harrison’s last 5 starts vs the Tigers, while as a team the Rangers are 4-17 in their last 21 meetings in Detroit. Note that the Rangers have the worst record in the American League at Detroit’s Comerica Park since the Tigers started playing there in 2000. With Harrison’s struggles against the Tigers and Detroit’s home field advantage I can’t see why the Tigers should be +116 dogs coming off a win. Take Detroit moneyline.

Milwaukee Brewers @ St Louis Cardinals – UNDER 7 RUNS (+100)

(Note: I’m risking 1 unit to win 1 unit)

Two aces on the mound tonight between the Brewers and the Cardinals, as the series is all tied up at 1 a piece. The Brewers Yovani Gallardo has been fantastic this postseason going 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and opponents .200 batting average. On the year he was 17-10 with a 3.52 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and .245 opponents batting average. Chris Carpenter has also been stellar this postseason, including pitching a Game 5 win in Philadelphia. He is 1-0 in the postseason with a 3.00 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 1.86 opponents batting average. Take note that the UNDER is 13-2-2 in the Brewers last 17 road games vs a team with a winning record, and 13-3-1 in their last 17 games as an underdog. The UNDER is 7-2-3 in their last 12 road games overall, and 5-2-1 in their last 8 following a loss. The UNDER is 5-1 in Gallardo’s last 6 overall, and 4-0 in his last 4 vs a team with a winning record. The UNDER is 9-2-1 in the Cardinals last 12 home games vs a team with a winning record, and 4-1 in their last 5 home games overall. The UNDER is also 15-6 in their last 21 playoff home games, and 6-2-2 following a day off. The UNDER is 6-1 in Carpenter’s last 7 home starts, and 34-16-2 in his last 52 home starts vs a team with a winning record. Also take note that the UNDER is 15-4-3 in these two teams last 22 meetings in St Louis. Put aside the first two high scoring games, as the pitchers are going to take over tonight. Gallardo and Carpenter have been stellar, and I look for that to continue tonight in an important Game 3. Take the UNDER here at even money.
